Another (stupid) day in my tech life !

August 16, 2008 – 12:15 pm

Objective:

  • To troubleshoot my LAMP installation and local Wordpress install not working (just showing a blank page).
  • How to rename multiple files the most efficient way in Linux. yes its CLI way.

A little in-depth view to above problems:

  • Ok so I followed the Arch Wiki to install Wordpress in a jiffy. Yeah just one command and then few configuration files editing, its that simple. Checked that installation was successful by running test file. Then downloaded Wordpress 2.6 and a backup of this site. Yep, it worked like charm ! I was running my own local Wordpress blog with default theme. Then I did the mistake and copied this website theme and pasted it in themes folder in local Wordpress install. And when I selected the theme I was no longer able to see my blog, there was just this blank white page. So what to do now ?
  • The second problem started when I tried to rename multiple files in Linux. The thing was that I was able to rename files having no space between file names, but if there happens to be a space then it will treat those two names as separate files. So I made sure that no file was having a space separated name. But I wanted a permanent solution to rename every file, no matter how its named.

Where to get support ?

  • For local Wordpress issue I first sought out Arch Linux forums, as am using Arch Linux. But I guess no one knew the answer as everything was correct in my installation and every other php files were working except for the blog inside Wordpress local install. I then went overboard and asked same question in Ubuntu forums, but there too I was left with nothing but a faint hope.
  • “Mass renaming using command line” - I started a thread named like this on Arch Linux forum. And guess what I got a reply within an hour. Thereafter I got many informative replies with some eye openers. Guess what ? Now I have the correct answer and few other tidbits too. Thanks to all the people at Arch Forum for their replies and the thread is still running…lolz.

Did I get the Answers ?

  • Not from the forums but yeah me myself got the answer by trial and error (this strategy rocks). I found out that my customized theme’s header was the problem. There was some tracking code by Google Analytics that was conflicting. So, I removed it and yay I can see my local Wordpress blog running again.
  • Yep, I already got the answer from THIS thread. And now am learning regular expressions and revising bash scripting (yeah me so bad at remembering things but this thing can’t be left forgotten).

Now what ?

  • Most likely a post coming up for regular expressions and mass renaming files using powerful CLI way :)
